 THE YEAR IN REVIEW: 1970

Since 1970 is widely regarded as year one in metal history, thanks largely to the “unholy trinity” of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin all releasing pivotal records this year. So here is where we begin with the 'Year in Review' series.

Black Sabbath unleashed not one but two genre‑defining albums that year: their self‑titled debut and Paranoid, both seismic moments in the evolution of heavy music. These days I find myself gravitating more toward Deep Purple’s In Rock, if only because I’ve practically worn out Sabbath’s early‑’70s catalogue after years of obsessive listening.

For me, the top three albums from 1970 tower above the rest. Much of what follows leans more toward fuzz‑drenched heavy blues rock than fully formed heavy metal, but the foundations were unmistakably being laid here even if the music here in general is too soft for my liking. I might like a song or two from these albums like Led Zeppelin's Immigrant song, Uriah Heep's Gypsy and Mountain's Mississippi Queen.

1970 was also a year marked by tragedy, as the hard rock world lost one of its brightest lights with the death of Jimi Hendrix. To my knowledge the first time this heavy rock was referred to as metal was in Rolling Stone Magazine where music journalist Mike Saunders referred to Humble Pie's Safe as Yesterday Is as heavy metal. In Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild from 1968 they sing about 'Heavy Metal Thunder'. But it's referring to 'Get your motor running'. So it's just a line in the lyric and not really describing the music. Which Mike Saunders did.

Deep Purple's In Rock was a contender with great tracks such as Speed King, Child in Time and Black Night. Black Sabbath's debut record with great tracks such as N.I.B., Behind the Wall of Sleep and Black Sabbath is of course legendary but I feel like Paranoid is a little heavier, I might be tired of Paranoid and Iron Man but a song like Hand of Doom is just excellent, I love Warpigs and Fairies Wear Boots as well. So for me this years award goes to Black Sabbath's Paranoid.
