DON DOTY

EX-DARK ANGEL & ELIMINATE

Don Doty is the original vocalist in Los Angeles thrash legends Dark Angel. Don handles the microphone on Dark Angel's debut We Have Arrived from 1985 and then on the mega classic Darkness Descends from 1986. After that he left the band and the music business altogether and Ron Rinehart took over the microphone in Dark Angel.

After decades away from the business Don Doty decided to return to his thrashing past. So Don formed the band Eliminate with his friend drummer Sasha Horn (Ex-Forbidden). They soon teamed up with guitarist Scott Owen (Ex-Hirax), bassist John Signorelli (Subversion) and Henry Elizondo (Ex-Devastation). So Eliminate has tons of experience for being a rather new band. Now over to Don Doty...

You're now fronting the super group Eliminate, with members from many classic 80's thrash metal bands. What can you tell us about Eliminate?

Eliminate is a band that knows how to thrash because we started it (kind of). We were all there when this thing called Metal got started.

How did you guys meet?

It started off with drummer Sasha Horn, he was there from the very first moment. I have made a lot of friends and a handful of brothers and he is one of them. Sasha also knows a lot of good people, like Mitch Harris. He heard what I was doing with Dark Angel then to find out I had not been invited to my own reunion. He threw together a song and sent it over.

Sasha and I were taken aback, it was like he knew me for years. We were excited but as things go Mitch had some other commitments so we were off and looking. I had heard about Scott Owen and John Signorelli through a friend named Henry on Facebook, so I called and met with them and welcomed them in. We all felt like we had found a brotherhood. Sasha also rounded up Henry Elizondo. Again we all just clicked.

Can we expect an album soon from Eliminate?

Well if things go as planned that would be cool. We are just putting things together. It is a litte difficult when both the guitarists live in Texas, Joe Cangelosi on drums is in New York, and John and myself live in LA. It is looking promising and we are writing and plan to record a demo soon.

You have been away for some time, so how is it to be back on the stage again?

It is great! It has been some time since I heard the croud sing our songs. Even John had mentioned how loud the crowd was and he could hear them saying the words.

Are you disappointed that you were excluded from the Dark Angel reunion?

Yeah a litte, but more at the loss of a friendship. I thought the fans wanted to hear Don Doty sing. Now I did not say and that's it. just the opposite when I talked to Ron he said Doty make sure to stop by his home town he wanted to see the show. I said see the show you're going to be in it, he is just as big a part of Dark Angel as I am. Hell I'm thankful he jumped in and kept it going.

Let's go back in time, Dark Angel debuted with the We Have Arrived album, What do you think about it in retrospect?

We Have Arrived was a good LP it had some versatile points. We wanted to take it to the next level with Darkness Descends.

We must talk about the album Darkness Descends, how is it to be part of such a legendary legacy?

Darkness was fun to make. We all got out there and did what we did, play music. I'm also thankful for being in the right place at the right time.

Darkness Descends (1986)

You left Dark Angel in 1987, what was the reason behind that. I've read about both drug issues and to spend more time with the family? What have you been up to all these years?

Really? Maybe you remember hearing about a guy named Jim Drabos. I had just done the shows in Texas and Dark Angel had another little tour lined up but I could not get off work. but when they came back it was me. I did the Country Club show in August of '87 and that was to be my last show. Things might have been different if someone would have shared that we had gotten the European tour. I most likely would have stayed. That was not shared until Ron was in the band. Who knows what might have happened had I stayed?

We Have Arrived (1985)

So what's your plans for the future? Will there be a tour soon for Eliminate?

Yes if I get my way . It is going to be the works. Album, tour, merch, all of it. Eliminate is the new old-school band.

What's the highlight of your career?

It would have been either the Dark Angel, Slayer, Venom Show or the Show at the Ritz.

What do you think of this thrash revival that has been going on for a couple of years? Have you noticed an increased interest for your music?

I think it's cool and I like how everyone is down for the cause.

Have you got any funny story to tell, if anything weird has happened while touring or recording?

If you don't know me come on out and introduce yourself. Every night is a wonder in itself.  We are making memories everyday. Come on down to a show as it will be a night to remember.

Any last words to our readers?

Thanks to all the fans that have been there for us.
All of you know, when I make it, you make it.
