THE CANDLEMASS VIDEO CHRONICLES
The Candlemass Video Chronicles is the video version of The Candlemass Chronicles, a series of magazines (Documents of doom!) that goes through the story behind several Candlemass studio albums. So that's what the Candlemass Video Chronicles is based upon but the Video Chronicles doesn't cover the exact same albums as the original magazines did.
Candlemass is of course a legendary Swedish doom metal band or epic doom metal band. They are the originators of the style with their debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. They are now 40 years into their career.
So here I present to you...
THE CANDLEMASS VIDEO CHRONICLES:
Candlemass’s debut redefined doom with operatic grandeur and crushing melancholy. Johan Längqvist’s haunting vocals on “Solitude” and “Under the Oak” literally invented the epic doom metal genre.. Sparse production, but timeless songwriting.
🕯️TCVC: NIGHTFALL (1987)
Enter Messiah Marcolin, his monk-like presence and soaring voice turned Candlemass into legends. “Bewitched” and “At the Gallows End” are doom anthems, while the album’s pacing and atmosphere remain unmatched.
🕯️TCVC: ANCIENT DREAMS (1988)
More melodic and ambitious, though slightly marred by flat production. Still, “Mirror Mirror” and “Darkness in Paradise” deliver epic weight. The band’s classical influences shine through, especially in the closing Beethoven cover.
🕯️TCVC: TALES OF CREATION (1989)
A conceptual triumph. Revisits “Under the Oak” with Messiah’s voice, and builds a mythic arc through tracks like “Dark Reflections” and “The Edge of Heaven.” The most cohesive and emotionally resonant of the Marcolin era.
🕯️TCVC: CHAPTER VI (1992)
Thomas Vikström steps in as vocalist, bringing a more power-metal edge. The album is heavier, darker, and so underrated. “The Dying Illusion” and “Where the Runes Still Speak” show Candlemass evolving without losing their soul.
🕯️ TCVC: DACTYLIS GLOMERATA (1998)
The rebirth after years of silence but Dactylis Glomerata was not a traditional Candlemass album in spirit. Originally conceived as a Leif Edling solo project, it carries a darker, more experimental tone with gothic and alternative influences. The doom is still there, but filtered through a murkier, more introspective lens. Tracks like “Dustflow” and “Wiz” show Edling exploring new textures while rebuilding the band’s identity from the ground up.
